One of Eight 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Touring Limousine by James YoungChassis LCDL81 is one of 8 left-drive Long Wheelbase Cloud IIIs fitted with James Young's superb Touring Limousine Coachwork, known by its design number "SCT100." Sometimes referred to as the "Baby Phantom" for its resemblance to the James Young bodied Phantom V, it is a masterclass of proportion and elegance. The SCT100 is a beautiful design, notable for its "turtleback" semi-fastback boot and sweeping fender lines. According to notes in Lawrence Dalton's book Rolls Royce: The Elegance Continues, chassis LCDL81 was displayed at the 1964 Paris Salon and has several fascinating details. Notable features of this car include a division window, integrated rear footrests, a spectacular wood rear fascia housing tray tables, a spare fuel gauge (curiously), and ventilation controls. Of particular interest is the rear sunroof panel, which slides forward over the driver's compartment and affords rear passengers a dose of fresh air and sunshine. Should the weather be less than ideal, it is equipped with air conditioning with integrated, upholstered outlets in the rear C-pillars.Finished in two-tone burgundy over black with beige leather upholstery, this Cloud III is offered in very good condition overall, having come from an extensive collection of Rolls-Royce and Bentley automobiles. Mechanically strong, it runs and drives wonderfully. As one of only eight left-drive SCT100 Cloud IIIs extant, it is undoubtedly a highly collectible and significant motorcar. One of the last examples (the KP series is the final version) of this modern-day classic produced, this exceptional automobile was acquired by us from Southern California where it had spent all of its rust-free life since delivery on August 11, 1965, to Mrs. Frances Hammer, wife of the famed industrialist Armand Hammer at their Los Angeles estate.It was later gifted to her niece, Mrs. Joan Weiss of that city where it remained until acquired with a total of slightly over 34,000 miles from new by an enthusiastic collector in 2005, who initially planned to retain it but was daunted by the additional improvements contemplated and therefore, resold it to us.The original Shell Grey (Silver) lacquer finish was redone excellently and required minimal attention to bring it to our standards. The front seats were misshapen, especially the driver's cushion and fresh Scarlet Connolly hides to match the balance of the remarkably well-preserved interior were obtained and used to re-trim them. The engine had been overheated at some in the past. Out of respect for the fine condition and pedigree of this specimen, we elected to completely rebuild the original correctly numbered engine, including new pistons of superior design, rather than to attempt any partial repairs. An authentic underwing dashboard vented air conditioner was obtained and fitted, as Mrs. Hammer had not elected to order one when the car was new.Correct original handbook, complete tools, and factory build sheets are included. This superb performer is among the finest examples extant. At present, we are unaware of its equal. The service history with ourselves for its meticulous owners over the past more than two decades is complete.
