1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I All-Weather Cabriolet by Barker This beautiful Phantom I represents a brilliant statement of what the collaboration of an automobile builder, a styling house and its client could achieve, particularly when money was no object. In this case that was certainly true, the client being an extremely interesting character, Alfred Loewenstein, a financier of Belgian origins who made his fortune with pioneering investments including in electric power and faux silk manufacturing. Sources state that he was the third wealthiest man in the world in this era. Loewenstein's Barker Rolls-Royce is one of their brilliant fully convertible all-seasons cars, which as for carriages were termed Cabriolets. Technically quite complicated and yet beautifully engineered it provided its owner with a series of configurations, be it fully enclosed with wind up windows, an open Sedanca de Ville option with the chauffeur publicly on display and the passengers hidden, or to take advantage of sunny days, perhaps at the horse races, the entire top collapses opening all passengers to the day.When Mr. Loewenstein took delivery of the car in 1926 he would have been at the height of his success, and yet he had his detractors also, such that when he died in what can be termed as an aircraft accident, many would call foul play. The morning after Independence Day 1928, readers of The New York Times would learn of his bizarre passing in this way - "Capt. A.Lowenstein falls from plane; drowning in sea; Belgian Financier Was Crossing the English Channel on his Way to Brussels. Opened the wrong door. Accident Is Not Discovered Till the Aircraft Nearly Reaches Its Destination. Known as 'Mystery Man'. Offered $50,000,000 Loan to His Country Without Interest --Narrowly Escaped Death Here. Made Big Fortune Swiftly. Planned to Return Here in Fall." The somewhat odd circumstances were that he disappeared while crossing the modest void of the English Channel in his own private Fokker trimotor plane, with rumors ranging from an absent-minded incident of his opening the wrong door when attempting to find the bathroom and plunging to his death (!), to someone ensuring that he vacated the plane under duress. The perpetrators are suggested as mobsters or even members of his family. Whatever the cause, the result was that his news of his passing spooked the markets for his various ventures immediately.Lowenstein's Rolls survives some 95 years later owing to its careful preservation and sensitive restoration in a series of sympathetic ownerships. It arrived in the USA in the 1960s, spending a long time with Californian owners, including time with a Dick Lyon of Balboa. Mr Lyon knew the immediate former owner Charles Gillet very well having served in the Navy with him, and Gillet had long admired the car. Ultimately, he was able to make a takeover bid for it in the late 1980s.The Rolls moved East into Gillet's collection and would be restored early on in his ownership, returning briefly to California for the work to be carried out by White Post Restorations. On its completion it was shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 1991, a big year for the marque, with their National taking place on the Peninsula. There on the 18th Fairway it secured the Lucius Beebe Trophy and would follow this up with AACA Grand National First Prize and CCCA Premier Awards. Even to this day as a 30 plus year old restoration it continues to display well. The previous owner acquired the car from Mr. Gillet's estate a few years ago, joining a diverse stable of collectors' cars.  A mechanically strong driver, the car currently runs and drives excellent. 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Special Newmarket Convertible Sedan by Brewster: One of 125Only 125 Rolls-Royce Phantom II chassis were produced with left-hand drive, numbered as the AJS and AMS series. Chassis number 234AJS, offered here, was one of only three of these cars bodied by Brewster as Newmarket convertible sedans, a style more often seen on the Phantom I, and is one of two of these delineated as Special models, indicating it had deviations from the stock design. In this case, such touches included the brightwork, finished in polished brass. Red over black with red interior. The Phantom II has been joyfully driven and maintained, retaining its original engine and coachwork, it is believed to have had only cosmetic restoration. The car has been well-looked-after mechanically, with the help of specialist friends in the Rolls-Royce world, and is running and driving well, having been enjoyed for regional events and local parades. 1 of 18 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Regent Convertible Coupe by BrewsterThis handsome 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Regent Convertible Coupe with Coachwork by Brewster is a matching numbers example and one of just 18 produced. A beautiful original example offered with documented history. Grey with burgundy interior. It wears a new soft-top, leather upholstery, and carpeting as well as reconditioned woodwork. An attractive car with just the right amount of patina. The older repaint is presentable but not perfect and shows its age in a few areas. Mechanically sound, it runs and drives well. A very straight car with a good door fit. As it was when new, the great characteristic of this style of coachwork is its versatility. Capable of offering full open motoring to breeze along in the sunshine, with none of the elegance of the car impeded, or proper isolation from the elements on colder or wetter days, this Phantom I can do it all. Anyone who has ever driven a well set up Phantom I will tell you that they are great tour cars. The 7.7 liter engine provides an overabundance of torque which makes them delightfully easy to drive. This engine is of course paired with a wonderful chassis with servo assisted brakes, and the exquisite deftness and precision of all the controls make the Phantom I one of the best driving experiences from the pre-war era.This Rolls-Royce Phantom I was delivered new to a Mr. John Brichetto, a bank president and land owner in Sacramento, California. Mr. Brichetto was clearly a man of great taste and means, and had the car delivered to him at The Hotel St. Francis, in downtown San Francisco. The car remained in his ownership until his death in 1934. The car dropped out of sight but remained in Northern California. After the war the car was in the ownership of Mr. Rafe Selfridge, a member of the Selfridge family, founders of Selfridge department stores in London, England. In the late 1950s Mr. Selfridge sold the car to his friend John Maxfield. Mr. Maxfield embarked on a fairly epic journey driving the Rolls from Barstow, CA to Gainesville, Florida. Mr. Maxfield continued to enjoy the car until 1973 when it passed to a fellow CCCA member Carter Farrar of Lakewood, Colorado. Mr. Farrar retained the car until his passing in 1998, when it was then sold on to Mr. Elliot Grossman in New York, who retained the car until 2012. From that point, the car was sold to its previous owner who replaced the soft-top, leather upholstery, and carpeting as well as reconditioned the woodwork. Today, this Rolls-Royce Phantom I Regent Convertible by Brewster is the perfect candidate for weekend drives and tours. Certainly a lovely addition to any collection. 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Binder: First Owned by Mrs Elizabeth Drexel LehrThis Rolls-Royce Phantom II with rare Binder Coachwork is just out of 30 year storage and has a fascinating history. Chassis shipped in January 1933 to Boulogne on the "Conifer". Its first owner was American author, philanthropist, and Manhattan socialite Mrs Elizabeth Drexel Lehr at 52, rue des Saints-Peres, Paris VII. In June 1901 Elizabeth married Henry Symes Lehr (*number in the description*9), aka Harry Lehr. The marriage was never consummated. According to her, on her wedding night, her husband told her that he loathed her and could not stand the thought of touching her ever, although he wanted her to understand she was to be cordial to him in public and he might in turn occasionally call her "darling". He had, he admitted, married her for her money because poverty terrified him. Drexel was an author who published two books, King Lehr and the Gilded Age (1935) and Turn of the World (1937). Her first novel, published after the death of her second husband, tells the story of her unhappy marriage to Henry Lehr, which was referred to as a "tragic farce" of a 28-year marriage. Time magazine described it as "a bitter, disillusioned book, 'King Lehr' is memorable for the lurid light it throws on U. S. Society of the Gilded Age, may confidently be opened as one of the most startling and scandalously intimate records of life among the wealthy yet written by one of them."Today, Chassis 30MY has good structure and is the ideal candidate for a well-deserved restoration. A video is available as the car first leaves the garage after 30 years in storage. It retains its original engine QU65 inside the car which looks in sound condition and appears to be complete. Partially disassembled but the Binder body plates are all available. A very special car that's well worth the effort to restore.
