Rivian's rapid rise is a story of innovation, sustainability, and adventure, stemming from one of the fastest-growing automotive startups in the electric vehicle (EV) era. Born from the mind of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) grad RJ Scaringe, a distinguished graduate with a doctorate in mechanical engineering in 2004, Rivian maintained a strong position in stealth mode as it began to expand in ambition. "In retrospect, everything we did was very deliberate…" Scaringe told Forbes magazine in 2020. "The goal was never to say, 'Hey, we’re going to make cars.' The goal was to figure out how to do electric right."

The public witnessed the bright spark of Rivian's ambition at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, where Rivian introduced two market-changing all-electric vehicles: the R1T, an all-electric pickup truck, and the R1S, an all-electric SUV. Both are built on Rivian’s unique skateboard platform, which places the battery pack, drive units, suspension, braking, and thermal system below the height of the wheels. Arranged in this manner, the skateboard platform benefits from a low center of gravity, provides more interior space, greater safety, and improves the overall efficiency of the vehicle. From this distinctive platform springs a suite of unprecedented performance metrics: acceleration performance on par with that of a supercar, becoming one of the first all-electric vehicles capable of serious off-roading, and offering battery ranges that challenge the outer frontiers of electric mobility.

The R1T is billed as an adventure vehicle for outdoor enthusiasts and professionals with a "built-to-conquer five-passenger crew cab" design, a "gear tunnel" for storing camping gear and other equipment, and a "double bed" for sleeping. A modular platform allows for the attachment of accessories for various outings, including camping, skiing, rafting, and mountain biking. Meanwhile, the R1S brings Rivian’s electric platform to families and adventurers needing more passenger space, offering the luxury and performance of the R1T but with more room.

We can certainly expect Rivian’s brand vision to continue through new models. Rivian has recently announced its expanding lineup and will market a variety of electric vehicles designed to live up to Rivian’s promise of adventure, along with a mission to curb climate change by purchasing carbon offsets and also ensuring a high-performance bar for its vehicles. On the roadmap are a few smaller vehicles for the European and Asian markets, a sensible strategy considering the sourcing of electrolytes and other materials from mines in the global South.

Beyond just vehicles, Rivian intends to build an ecosystem for its customers, including a US network of fast chargers known as the Rivian Adventure Network, with urban destinations and more remote locations to keep customers adventuring. The brand's definition thus encompasses the vehicle, the charging infrastructure, and the location and experience it provides.

From startup to a key player in the EV space, Rivian’s core values of innovation, environmental responsibility, and adventurous vehicles are sure to be central to the company as it grows into a larger global presence and introduces new Rivian EV models. Rivian remains committed to leveraging electrification and sustainability to challenge the dominance of internal combustion and pave the way for electric vehicles.
