*1990 Pontiac Trans Am GTA*Â The third generation of the beloved Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1981 as a 1982 model year car. With a new, aerodynamic shape and an appealing array of powertrain options, the Firebird and its high-performance Trans Am sub-model became quite popular. This popularity was also bolstered thanks to the Firebirdâs starring role in one of the 1980s most legendary TV shows Knight Rider as KITT. Over the course of the 3rd generation Firebirdâs lifecycle, it received some updates and as it neared the end of the production run in 1992, was a tremendously improved car.Â This 1990 Trans-Am GTA is an outstandingly kept example of the highest performing Trans Am available at the time. Finished in White over Beachwood leather, the car shows just 59,973 miles at the time of cataloging and is reportedly one of just 40 cars produced in white this year. One of the first things you notice on this striking coupe is the wheels - thanks to the optional Performance Package, a set of Superlight 16-Inch gold mesh wheels have been fitted. These are not only era appropriate but give the car a far more sporting look than the more standard alloys available at the time. Thanks to some small, yet significant updates done throughout the carâs run, by the time this car was produced in 1990, the Trans Am was the most aerodynamic car to ever leave General Motors to that point, and you can tell just by its stunning shape.Â Moving inside the Trans Am and you are met with a very sporty cabin, with a pair of beautiful tan sport seats up front, and a smaller bench for 2 more situated behind. The tan leather and carpet found in this example has been kept to a remarkably high standard over the years, and shows hardly any bolster wear and the sheen that plastic typically gets after heavy use, is absent in this example. For the first year in the modelâs history, a driverâs side airbag was standard equipment, and the 4-spoke steering wheel frames the Trans Amâs signature âgraph paperâ style gauges. The stereo has been upgraded on this car with a Bluetooth capable Kenwood head unit, and new door speakers were also installed.Â Powering this Trans Am is the most powerful engine available in 1990- a 5.7-liter L98 V8 with fuel injection that is rated at 235 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant sent power to the posi-traction rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic gearbox. An aluminum driveshaft was fitted to lower the rotating mass and help the engine spin up more smoothly and an oil cooler was installed from the factory to ensure great performance even when you were driving the car hard.Â This generation of Trans Am epitomizes that golden era in the late 1980s and early 1990s when American manufacturers were finally clawing back all of the performance they lost in the 1970s and 80s. Going up against cars like the Fox Body Mustang and IROC-Z Camaros, the Trans Am GTA could hold its own with the best of them, and had some unique features that put those other cars to shame. *1964 Pontiac LeMans Convertible*Â The Pontiac GTO is widely regarded as the first muscle car, and the car that kicked off the American horsepower wars of the 1960s and 1970s. Although the GTO gets a lot of the attention, it was initially a trim of the intermediate-size LeMans that was little more than some trim and a larger engine. Given that, turning LeMans into GTO clones is widely done and you get all of the exciting driving experience of the original GTO, at a fraction of the price. This 1964 LeMans is exactly that - a car that has received the GTO treatment to offer improved performance and looks over a standard LeMans.Â Finished in Black over Black with a Black convertible top, this LeMans has been under single ownership since 1984 and lived in the Western Washington area for even longer than that. The exterior upgrades to bring this car to GTO-spec include a new hood and GTO badging on the grille, rear quarters and decklid. A set of Rally II wheels with black centers and polished trim rings complete the look and are wrapped in period-correct looking BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires with white sidewall lettering. For some added convenience, the black top is power actuated and folds away cleanly behind the rear seats.Â The black vinyl interior consists of a pair of bucket seats up front, and a rear bench. In keeping with the GTOâs sporting nature, a long center console finished in textured aluminum runs between the two front seats, and machine turned aluminum trim is seen on the gauge cluster as well. The addition of a wood and stainless Grant GT steering wheel takes the interior up a notch, looking great and is pleasant to use thanks to the addition of power steering.Â The main differentiator between the LeMans and the GTO was what is sitting under the hood and the builder of this car understood that. Most LeMansâ were powered by an inline-6 or a small displacement V8, while this car now has a 400ci V8 with some performance parts. Although the 400 ci V8 wasnât offered until 1967, it is a great motor to put in this car as it is known for being extremely stout and of course, quite powerful. Total power isnât known for this car but in period, the stock cars with a 4bbl carburetor produced 335 horsepower and an astonishing 441 lb-ft of torque. This example benefits from an Edelbrock high-rise intake, and Holley finned valve covers that are painted to match the engine block. Power is sent through a 3-speed automatic with âHis and Hersâ shifting (can function as a standard automatic or an early âsequentialâ style shiftable unit) to the rear wheels.Â It canât be denied that the Pontiac GTO is one of the most significant American performance cars and the vehicle that launched the muscle car wars that persist even today. This LeMans built to GTO specifications is a perfect car for the enthusiast who wants the GTO experience, at a bargain price.
