But sometimes it's that cumulative silence that drives innovation and creates the need to be one step ahead of people's expectations. McLaren took ahold of those reins and then some with this: the 2016 McLaren P1 GTR. The most hardcore, race-oriented and limited-edition McLaren P1 ever created.  The McLaren P1 GTR was originally released as a special track-only version of McLaren's P1 street car, available and offered to only to McLaren P1 owners once the last of the 375 street P1s were completed. However, due to the similarities to the road car, there have been a number of cars made to allow the P1 GTR to become road-legal. The GTR was given revised engine mapping for a power boost, a fixed and larger hydraulically-actuated wing that was capable of immense downforce, special aerodynamic improvements including a larger front splitter and carbon fiber underside which is good for 10% more downforce.  Together these touches produce a whole new package, creating this ultimate hardcore P1. A wider track of 3.2 inches vs. the normal P1 ensures space for wider front and rear tires for ample grip. 110 pounds are stripped from the already-lightweight body by removing various components including sound deadening materials and replacing the car's glass with polycarbonate. The results are a staggering set of numbers: A combined output of 986 horsepower, 0-60 miles per hour in just 2.4 seconds and will reach a top speed of 225 miles an hour, all while being able to brake from 60 miles an hour to 0 in 85 feet while cornering at 1.54Gs.  With no regulations to limit them, the engineers at McLaren were let loose to turn everything to 11 with every intent of maxing performance out of every possible system. The mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine paired with its high-performance electric motor generate a mind-boggling 986hp. With this performance an F1 ERS-style push-to-pass system has been designed for the GTR, allowing you to have sudden bursts of extra power to get past that nagging driver at your track day. This sudden boost is good for a total of 1,045 horsepower for short bursts. The large fixed wing features a F1-derived Drag Reduction System for straight line speed, and the exterior wing mirrors have been repositioned to the A pillars to move them closer to the eye of the driver and reduce aerodynamic drag. Included inside every GTR is a permanent video recording system, able to monitor the driver's actions while overlaying data upon export to review after their sessions.  The GTR benefits from other improvements that were not included on the street car. The entire car has been lowered, but retains its front axle nose lift for loading and going over bumps you might encounter. 19-inch motorsport center locking wheels ensure quick and secure wheel changes with the onboard jacking system, borrowed from McLaren's 650S GT3 racer. Below the massive wing sits a bespoke titanium and Inconel alloy exhaust system. Per McLaren, the exhaust maximizes the visceral sound from the 3.8-liter V8 engine while reducing backpressure to increase performance.  This McLaren P1 GTR was ordered new for a U.S. owner to join his vehicle collection. Evident by the mileage on the odometer and the cosmetic condition of the entire car, the GTR was hardly used. The owner also spec'd the car with the factory track package, which includes the equipment required for a track day. Items include twin nitrogen bottles to power the two center-lock air guns, one nitrogen bottle to power the car's in-board lift system, Vlog equipment for video recording from the on-board cameras, a Bowser race fuel system for refueling, a computer tablet used to access the car's computer to view telemetry and codes, spare set of track tires, aluminum solid mounts to elevate the car without relying on nitrogen, torque wrench with a spare socket, and P1 GTR car cover. In as-new condition, this is an opportunity to buy a P1 GTR that is essentially fresh from the factory and ready for its next owner to track and/or convert for road use. HDK stands for High Downforce Kit and was a special option available to McLaren F1 owners after McLaren won the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1995 with the F1 GTR. The HDK allowed F1 road car owners to have some of the same aero components and bodywork from the GTR fitted to their car, thus transforming the look and feel from a tame road car to a race-winning weapon for the road. Fast forward over 25 years later, Lanzante, the very same team that ran that LeMans winning F1 for McLaren, has created the P1 HDK. The P1 HDK program follows in the same footsteps as the F1 HDK, with the car starting life as a P1 road car and having all of the GTR aero and bodywork custom fitted to it. The HDK for the F1 in 1995 was pretty tame compared to what you see on the P1 HDK and that is because of over two decades of advancement in the world of motorsport and pushing the limits. Therefore, what was only a couple components fitted to the F1 back in the day has advanced to every single panel on the P1 being changed. In fact the only panel left untouched is the roof. The build process is handled with almost aerospace like precision at Lanzante's workshop and headquarters in Petersfield, England. In keeping with the story and homage of the F1 HDK, only 9 P1 HDKs will ever be built, which is how many F1's have been fitted with the HDK. This particular car is build number 5 and is built using P1 chassis 063, formerly owned by well-known McLaren F1 GTR racing driver and champion Ray Bellm. The car started life as standard Volcano Red with Black interior and since the build was being done during McLaren's big 60th Anniversary celebration, it was decided that it would have a very "McLaren" feeling spec. The car is finished in Satin Supernova Silver, silver being a color almost as important as orange in McLaren's history as it was used on the launch car for the McLaren F1 and Supernova silver being used on the P1 that broke the Nurburgring record. The famous McLaren Orange however makes a bold and prominent appearance on the interior, with a very unique two tone color split of black Alcantara and McLaren orange leather. The final touch to this celebratory spec is the 60th anniversary logo on both sides of the exposed carbon tub when you open the doors. It should also be noted that this is the only P1 HDK with satin paint, which contrasts perfectly with the gloss exposed carbon fiber found extensively throughout the exterior of the car. And finally, the piece de resistance, the 4.0L "LM spec" engine. Originally only 6 of these engines existed, found only in the back of the P1 LM. This engine has now been made available by Lanzante on their special builds. Being an owner of 1 of the 375 P1's is a pretty exclusive group to belong to, but being 1 of 9 is on another level.

XP2R or eXperimental Prototype 2 as it started off, was one of the first development mules in the ground-breaking project. Initially running in the racetrack camouflage prior to the public unveil, XP2R carried out extensive testing including vMax attempts, tyre testing with Pirelli, braking system signoff with Akebono, active aerodynamics, Race Mode and damper tuning. It received its fully-painted bodywork in June 2013, as the programme became more public, appearing once again at the Nürburgring as it worked through the final development programme stages, aiming towards the laptime attempt.
 
As genuine race cars have become more appealing in recent years, particularly when they offer bona fide racing provenance, P1-XP2R presents as one of the most unique and talked about histories of a specific roadcar in recent years. Fully recommissioned at the end of its ‘working life’ by McLaren Automotive, it is exactly as it completed its demanding development programme – finished in stunning Supernova Silver metallic bodywork, with stealth wheels – and still wears its ‘prototype vehicle’ monikers. XP2R is now held with an extensive set of spares, including a second set of carbon fibre bodywork. With these spare parts and bodywork, a complete silhouette vehicle has been created, which sits alongside the car. This second model is all-but identical to the original prototype, although showing the different coloured brake caliper which were worn during the development programme.
