When asked to imagine a hypercar, one does not need to keep their eyes closed for long before the McLaren P1 comes to mind. Category leading in every respect, the F1 successor unveiled in 2013 married the best of McLaren's innovative technologies with cutting-edge developments, placing it soundly atop the podium of the day by nearly any measure. McLaren built on the F1's resounding success not with mere aesthetic adjustments, but by looking to the future, seamlessly integrating top-tier performance with emerging Formula One technology, the coupling of which resulted in a groundbreaking hybrid power unit never before seen for a supercar.

Nearly sacrilege for the time, McLaren paired the MP4-12C-sourced 3.8L twin-turbocharged V8 with an in-house-developed electric motor, ringing in the turbo-hybrid era with a combined 903 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. The firm's race-bred purism shows itself in every aspect of the car; each exterior component was designed for maximum downforce, resulting in over 1,300 pounds of it keeping the car glued to the road or track, adjustable by the driver via a tilting rear wing ala the Formula One drag reduction system. Its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission routes power to the rear wheels, and a driver-activated Instant Power Assist System &#40;IPAS&#41; adds additional torque provided by the electric motor at the touch of a button on the multifunction yoke, again borrowing directly from Formula One. Lightness everywhere, the chassis is constructed of a single-piece carbon fiber monocoque, known as the McLaren MonoCage, a development of the MonoCell found in the MP4-12C, and proving that even for a hypercar, safety doesn't have to come at the expense of performance.

This 2014 McLaren P1 has remained part of the Ikonick Collection of Miami, Florida, since 2017. This example is chassis number 110 out of only 375 units ever produced, thus representing a rare opportunity to own a piece of the extremely limited production run. The car is finished in special Elite White &#40;$11,200&#41; with black exterior accents and features a sea of carbon fiber components from the styled body-side air intakes to the deployable front flaps to the massive rear wing, at its maximum extension reaching nearly 12" from its pivoting mount. Black suede covers the sport seats, and if you thought the carbon fiber ended with the exterior, you would be very mistaken; the dash, center console, doors, and nearly every other interior surface is covered with the stuff. A portrait screen infotainment system and safety harness attachment points round out the cabin. This P1 is now offered with a window sticker, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Florida title.

HDK stands for High Downforce Kit and was a special option available to McLaren F1 owners after McLaren won the 24 Hours of LeMans in 1995 with the F1 GTR. The HDK allowed F1 road car owners to have some of the same aero components and bodywork from the GTR fitted to their car, thus transforming the look and feel from a tame road car to a race-winning weapon for the road. Fast forward over 25 years later, Lanzante, the very same team that ran that LeMans winning F1 for McLaren, has created the P1 HDK. The P1 HDK program follows in the same footsteps as the F1 HDK, with the car starting life as a P1 road car and having all of the GTR aero and bodywork custom fitted to it. The HDK for the F1 in 1995 was pretty tame compared to what you see on the P1 HDK and that is because of over two decades of advancement in the world of motorsport and pushing the limits. Therefore, what was only a couple components fitted to the F1 back in the day has advanced to every single panel on the P1 being changed. In fact the only panel left untouched is the roof. The build process is handled with almost aerospace like precision at Lanzante's workshop and headquarters in Petersfield, England. In keeping with the story and homage of the F1 HDK, only 9 P1 HDKs will ever be built, which is how many F1's have been fitted with the HDK. This particular car is build number 5 and is built using P1 chassis 063, formerly owned by well-known McLaren F1 GTR racing driver and champion Ray Bellm. The car started life as standard Volcano Red with Black interior and since the build was being done during McLaren's big 60th Anniversary celebration, it was decided that it would have a very "McLaren" feeling spec. The car is finished in Satin Supernova Silver, silver being a color almost as important as orange in McLaren's history as it was used on the launch car for the McLaren F1 and Supernova silver being used on the P1 that broke the Nurburgring record. The famous McLaren Orange however makes a bold and prominent appearance on the interior, with a very unique two tone color split of black Alcantara and McLaren orange leather. The final touch to this celebratory spec is the 60th anniversary logo on both sides of the exposed carbon tub when you open the doors. It should also be noted that this is the only P1 HDK with satin paint, which contrasts perfectly with the gloss exposed carbon fiber found extensively throughout the exterior of the car. And finally, the piece de resistance, the 4.0L "LM spec" engine. Originally only 6 of these engines existed, found only in the back of the P1 LM. This engine has now been made available by Lanzante on their special builds. Being an owner of 1 of the 375 P1's is a pretty exclusive group to belong to, but being 1 of 9 is on another level.

To simply exist, let alone excel, in that exalted company was truly a remarkable achievement considering the P1 was only the second model produced by modern-day McLaren Automotive. Just two years after its first car, the MP4-12C, had gone on sale in 2011, the firm saw fit to release a spiritual successor to the hallowed F1. And in working so quickly, the P1 beat its two chief rivals to market. Despite seeming to have impossible shoes to fill given the reputation of its Gordon Murray-designed forefather, the McLaren P1 of 2013 launched to rave reviews. rnrnThe car was equipped with a 3.8-litre V-8 engine enhanced by a 131-kilowatt electric motor to maintain power delivery while the brace of turbochargers spooled. All told, the setup produced some 903 horsepower, which was sent exclusively to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Despite carrying a hybrid battery system, the dry weight came in at an impressive 1,395 kilograms, thanks in part to the carbon fibre monocoque construction-itself tipping the scales at only 90 kilograms-that sits at the heart of all McLaren designs. The potency and comparatively light weight combined, the P1 launched from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds. Perhaps even more impressively 0 to 200 km/h was over in only 6.8 seconds, while the speedometer could keep climbing to a top speed of 350. rnrnRarer than both the 918 and LaFerrari, McLaren built just 375 examples of the P1 over two years. Despite production having ended almost a decade ago-and the marque having announced its Ultimate Series replacement, the W1, in the autumn of 2024-for many it is the P1 that remains their poster car, and the favourite from the famed Holy Trinity. rnrnThe car offered here, chassis 055, is finished in the stunning shade of Volcano Orange, with the bright paint helping to accentuate the sinewy bodywork styled chiefly by Frank Stephenson. The driver-focused cabin, meanwhile, is suitably pared back. The interior marries exposed carbon fibre weave with black Alcantara trim, while complementing orange stitching on the seats helps draw the eye. Notably the unencumbered steering wheel features a DRS (Drag Reduction System) button. Inspired by sister company McLaren Racing's Formula 1 programme, the P1 gained a moveable rear wing, which the driver could stall to cut through the air more cleanly to achieve that incredible top speed. Then, when out on track in maximum attack mode, the aerodynamic appendages worked together to produce more than 600 kilograms of downforce while the interlinked hydropneumatic dampers could also be stiffened by up to 300 per cent.rnrnThis P1 was supplied new to Tokyo in 2014, where it has remained ever since-most recently as part of a significant private collection under the care of its second and current custodian. The car now heads for sale accompanied by its owner's guides, first aid kit, and charging cables, while the odometer displayed 3,625 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. rnrnDespite launching 11 years ago, the exceptional performance of the P1 ensures that it still ranks among the upper echelon of hypercars. The age-defying design also means the model remains every bit the showstopper at all events it attends.
