This institute rarely gives awards to vehicles. It also won Car Life s 1961 Engineering Excellence Award. For 1961, the Continental was redesigned again and the Mark series moniker was dropped it was now simply known as the Lincoln Continental. Styled by Elwood Engel, the new car was a drastic departure from the Mark III. It was originally intended as a design proposal for the new Thunderbird, but was wisely chosen by Bob McNamara to go to Lincoln and was tweaked to suit the brandâs image. Gone was the frenetic style and excessive detail, and in its place was an elegant, low, slab-sided sedan or four-door convertible complete with rear suicide hinged doors. Though still a fairly big car, the new Continental was a full 14-inches shorter than the outgoing car, and it carried its bulk much better than before. Crisp and elegant, the Continental became an icon of 1960s style and enjoyed a successful run from 1961 through 1969, with over 360,000 units sold in total. *1985 Lincoln Continental Mk VIII LSC*Â The Lincoln Continental is without a doubt one of the most important luxury cars in the history of the American automotive industry. From its early generations with Rolls-Royce rivaling quality to the era-defining âsuicide-doorâ cars from the early 1960s, the Continental was always a car at the cutting edge of styling and technology. The MK VII was a personal luxury coupe that debuted in 1983 for the 1984 model year. Based on the Fox Body Mustang chassis, the car was smaller and nimbler than previous Continentals, yet it retained the luxury buyers had come to expect from the brand.Â This 1985 Lincoln Continental MK VII LSC is a fantastically preserved example that shows just 16,908 miles from new at the time of cataloging. Sold new at L&B Lincoln-Mercury in Babylon, NY on November 23 1984, the car spent time in Florida and California before moving up to the greater Seattle area earlier in 2024. Finished in Midnight Black Over a Charcoal leather interior, the car remains in excellent condition throughout and is a true icon of 1980s American luxury. The âLSCâ in the carâs name stands for Luxury Sports Coupe which was the sportier upper-trim level offered at the time. From the outside, the LSC was differentiated by the reduced chrome trim, sporty 16-inch BBS mesh wheels with blackwall tires that, in period, were shared with the Camaro Z/28.Â The changes for the LSC continued on the interior, with more heavily bolstered sport seats up front and a great looking set of digital gauges. That being said, the MK VII still placed luxury above all else so the seats remained extremely comfortable and the car was packed with standard convenience features. A premium audio system with a cassette player was fitted in the center console, alongside an automatic climate control system. A digital message display gave readouts about average speed, fuel economy and other important stats for the car, while an overhead console was packed with an exterior thermometer, map lights, compass display and garage door opener. This car was even fitted with keyless entry thanks to an integrated keypad on the driverâs side door.Â Powering the MK VII is the same HO 5.0-liter fuel injected V8 found in the contemporary Mustang. Producing 140 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque, power was sent to a limited slip rear axle via a 4-speed automatic gearbox. This Continental was the first American car to be fitted standard with 4-wheel disc brakes that were fitted with an ABS system. Additionally, to ensure a smooth ride, air suspension was fitted from the factory at all four corners which would level the car when loaded with luggage or occupants. This example just underwent a servicing with us at Park Place and is ready to be driven and enjoyed!Â In the world of classic cars, finding an Italian supercar or a limited edition Corvette with low miles that has been cherished by its previous owners isnât too difficult to do. But when it comes to cars like the Lincoln Continental MK VII, typically when somebody bought one, it was to drive and use and they would go on to pile on the miles - using the car as it was intended.
