Following in the footsteps of the 550 Barchetta, Ferrari realized that they would need another solution for the convertible top on their V-12 grand tourer, as the roof on the 550 Barchetta proved too complex and time consuming to erect for many owners. rnrnThe solution was the unique Recovromico rotating hardtop. Constructed utilizing a carbon fibre frame integrated with electrochromic glass, this was the first roof of its kind to be fitted to a production car. When the top was closed, the opacity of the glass in the roof could be adjusted via a dial in the cabin. The driver and passenger could experience the full brightness of a conventional sunroof at its lightest setting or one percent of available light at its darkest. Furthermore, the Superamerica could be transformed into a convertible at just a press of a button, with the roof rotating back to rest flush with the boot lid in just 10 seconds, leaving the rear window in place to function as a wind deflector.rnrnJust 559 examples of the 575 Superamerica were built, all allocated to Ferrari VIP customers, and the example offered here has remained with its original owner from new. Built to German market specifications, it is finished in Giallo Modena over a two-tone Nero and Charcoal interior. Fitted with the F1-style six-speed, semi-automatic transmission with paddle-shift, it also boasts the seldom seen option of carbon fibre bucket seats. It was also equipped from new with the Handling GTC package, which added upgraded carbon-ceramic brakes, a more performance-oriented suspension, free-flowing exhaust, and modular 19-inch wheels.rnrnExported to Switzerland when its original owner relocated there a number of years ago, this 575 Superamerica was used by him regularly, illustrating the model's great versatility, and as a result, it has been driven just under 27,500 km from new. Replacing the F512 M, the classically beautiful 550 entered production in 1996. With its long bonnet and short tail, the new front-engined flagship clearly harked back to Maranello greatest hits such as the 365 GTB/4 Daytona.rnrnGiven the almost universal critical acclaim garnered by the new model, Ferrari opted for evolution rather than revolution when it came to devising a successor. The 575M Maranello of 2002 gained subtly tweaked styling while the V-12 powerplant grew by 205 cc to 5,748. rnrnOnce again following the path laid by the 550 with its open Barchetta, Ferrari then introduced a limited-edition drop-top version of the 575M. Christened the Superamerica, in turn reviving a name from the 1950s and 1960s, the model featured a Revocromico rotating electric roof. The design employed a carbon fibre structure to support the glass panel, which could be tinted at the touch a button. Boasting 533 horsepower to result in a top speed of 199 mph, Ferrari marketed the car as the fastest convertible in the world. Just 559 were built.rnrnCompleted in January 2006, this left-hand-drive example was configured with a paddle-operated electro-hydraulic F1 six-speed transmission. Delivered to its first owner in Finland on 3 September and subsequently acquired by a French collector, the Superamerica was later sold to Japan and then registered to Dubai in May 2021. Around this time, the car reportedly benefited from an extensive timing belt service while the cracked original roof was replaced. rnrnAcquired by the consignor in November 2023, this Ferrari is stunningly presented in Nero Daytona. The exterior is completed by 19-inch five-spoke split wheels and Scuderia shields set into the front wings.
