The 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 6-Pack's enduring appeal stems not only from its handsome styling, but also its ability to accommodate the entire Chrysler engine range by virtue of the front sub-frame, which was borrowed from the B-bodied Charger/Coronet. In addition, the use of the Charger/Coronet rear suspension layout provided a wide rear track that could house larger wheels and tires. The result was the so-called E-body, which would underpin both the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Barracuda. Launched for the 1970 model year in coupe and convertible variants, the Challenger was a late arrival to the muscle-car scene. Despite being tardy, it did gain popularity with wild colors, vast options, and an impressive roster of powertrain combinations. One of the more appealing trim levels was the high-performance R/T or "Road and Track" option package. It included all the standard Challenger features and added an electric clock, Rallye gauge cluster, Rallye suspension with front and rear sway bars, heavy-duty front disc and rear drum brakes, fiberglass belted tires with raised white letters, and special striping. Code stampings on the fender tag indicate that this Challenger R/T was further equipped from the factory with power brakes, dual exhaust system with bright tips, hood tie-down pins, V9W code rear bumble bee stripe, bucket seats, center console with woodgrain trim, painted racing mirrors with driver's side remote adjustment, tachometer, Rallye gauge cluster and AM radio. However, the first use of the Challenger name by Dodge was in 1959 for marketing a "value version" of the full-sized Coronet Silver Challenger.  From model years 1970 to 1974, the first generation Dodge Challenger pony car was built using the Chrysler E platform in hardtop and convertible body styles sharing major components with the Plymouth Barracuda.  Introduced in fall 1969 for the 1970 model year, the Challenger was one of two Chrysler E-body cars, the other being the slightly smaller Plymouth Barracuda. Positioned to compete against the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird in the upper end of the pony car market segment, it was "a rather late response" to the Ford Mustang, which debuted in April 1964. Even so, Chrysler intended the new Challenger as the most potent pony car ever, and like the less expensive Barracuda, it was available in a staggering number of trim and option levels, and with virtually every engine in Chrysler's inventory.  The Challenger's longer wheelbase, larger dimensions, and more luxurious interior were prompted by the launch of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, likewise a bigger, more luxurious and more expensive pony car aimed at affluent young American buyers. The 110" wheelbase was 2" longer than the Barracuda's, and the Dodge differed substantially in its Sheetmetal, much as the Cougar differed from the shorter-wheelbase Mustang. Air conditioning and a rear window defogger were optional.  Exterior design was penned by Carl Cameron, who was also responsible for the exterior designs of the 1966 Dodge Charger. Cameron based the 1970 Challenger grille on an older sketch of a stillborn 1966 Charger prototype that was to have a turbine engine.  A special model only available for the 1970 model year was the Challenger T/A (Trans Am) racing homologation car. In order to race in the Sports Car Club of America's Trans American Sedan Championship Trans Am, Dodge built a street version of its race car (just like Plymouth with its Plymouth 'Cuda AAR) which it called the Dodge Challenger T/A (Trans Am).  Although the race cars ran a destroked version of the 340, street versions took the 340 and added a trio of two-barrel carburetors atop an aluminum intake manifold, creating the 340 Six Pack. Dodge rated the 340 Six Pack at 290HP, only 15HP more than the original 340 engine. Air came in through a suitcase-sized air scoop molded into the pinned down, hinged matte-black fiberglass hood. A low-restriction dual-outlet exhaust ran to the stock muffler location, then reversed direction to exit in chrome tipped "megaphone" outlets in front of the rear wheels. Options included a TorqueFlite automatic or pistol-grip Hurst-shifted four-speed transmission, 3.55:1 or 3.90:1 gear ratios, as well as manual or power steering. Front disc brakes were standard.  The special Rallye suspension used heavy-duty parts and increased the rate of the rear springs. The T/A was one of the first U.S. muscle cars to fit different size tires at the front and rear: E60x15 Goodyear Polyglas in the front, and G60x15 on the rear axle. The modified chamber elevated the tail enough to clear the rear tires and its side exhaust outlets. Thick dual side stripes, bold ID graphics, a fiberglass ducktail rear spoiler, and a fiberglass front spoiler were also included. The interior was identical to other Challengers.  The Challenger T/A's scored a few top-three finishes, but lack of a development budget and the short-lived Keith Black built 303 cu in (5.0 L) engines led to Dodge leaving the series at season's end. The street version suffered from severe understeer in fast corners, largely due to the smaller front tires. Only 2,399 T/As were made. A 1971 model using the 340 engine with a 4-barrel carburetor was planned and appeared in advertising, but was not produced since Dodge had withdrawn from the race series.

*1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi Convertible Resto-Mod*This 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi Convertible is the culmination of a 20 year project, to create what could be considered the Ultimate Mopar. As a former ASE Mechanic, Electrical Engineer and Pilot, simply good would not cut it on this build and after acquiring the base car in 2004, the build began in four stages. In 1970, Dodge produced 9 original Hemi Challenger Convertibles- 5 of which were fitted with a 4 speed manual and 4 automatics, as those have reached values unattainable for most enthusiasts, the initial idea was to replicate that-but over time it morphed into an even more impressive project.Starting with an original Challenger Convertible in the eye catching shade of Top Banana Yellow you see here, the project began by stripping the entire car down to bare metal. With over 1,000 hours spent in body and paint, there was an emphasis put on ensuring there were no imperfections in the body and that the panel gaps were all perfect. The entire unibody was put into a jig to make sure all elements were brought back to factory dimensions and a new fiberglass hood was added with the Shaker induction scoop. When it came time to paint, DuPont Chroma 2 was used, matching the original Top Banana Yellow color, and then adding 10 coats of DuPont Diamond Show clear coat on the upper section of the car. The lower section was finished in matching DuPont Chroma paint but in this case, single stage. All of the trim was either straightened and polished or replaced with the highest quality replacements available and shows flawlessly. Even the underside of the car was painted to match the stunning Top Banana yellow top, and the exhaust is finished in black high-temp paint. Although this car was originally fitted with a manual convertible top, it was converted to power using factory components but the pump was rebuilt along with the lines and ram cylinders. The top itself is a high quality Haartz canvas piece that was custom made to fit this car, and a replacement glass rear window was added.This Challenger is more than just some great bodywork on a sub-par chassis though. It was really when it got to the underpinnings where this turned from a straight ahead restoration, into something far more significant. The front suspension system was replaced with coilover independent suspension which offers tremendous adjustability and allows for the addition of a precise rack and pinion steering system. Additionally, the change in suspension alone removes over 110 lbs from the nose when compared to an original Hemi Challenger Convertible, meaning that not only does it handle better thanks to the new pieces but feels more nimble than the original car too. The suspension in the rear is based on the A33/34 TrackPak that was the original heavy duty suspension found in Hemi Challengers, retaining leaf springs for a standard look. That being said, the leaf springs under the car now are completely custom and built to ensure a perfect stance. Also sitting out back is a Strange-S60 rear end with heavy duty axles, 3.73 gears and a limited slip differential from Eaton. Wilwood disc brakes sit at all 4 corners and feature stainless hardlines, Hydroboost power brake system, front line-lock and an electronic parking brake.Under the hood sits a 517 cubic inch Hemi V8 that features a hefty list of newer performance parts that mean it is both far more potent than the original Hem Challenger, while also weighing less. The starting point was a stout 1990s Trenton Casting Plant Hemi service block, that was bored .40 over which was combined with a 4.5 forged stroker crankshaft, bringing the displacement from 426 ci to 517 ci. Additionally, compression was raised to 10.75:1 while Vendor Stage V aluminum heads with lightweight valves and high RPM springs were installed. For induction, a height matched aluminum dual 4bbl manifold was installed with dual 600cfm Edelbrock carburetors that breathe through the Shaker hood and are fed by a high flow electric fuel pump with custom heat shielding. Coil on plug ignition has also been fitted which does away with one of the Hemi's biggest issues- not producing enough spark- yet the system has been hidden to keep the vintage under hood loo Now estimated to produce in excess of 650 horsepower, one of the most remarkable things is the fact that when you open the hood, you could easily be convinced it was nearly all original. Backing up the engine is a Chrysler A-833 4-speed manual gearbox with an overdrive 4th gear and the quintessential Dodge pistol grip shifter. The level of craftsmanship and care and attention to detail are truly second to none with this build.Open the door to this Challenger and you will be greeted by an interior that although clearly updated with improved materials and a more built out center console, doesn't look all that different from an original Challenger. The seats are stock units reimagined utilizing modified frames and reshaped foam and covers- and soft Ultra-Leather covers both the seats and all of the interior panels, installed at a cost of more than $8,000. But under it all, may be the most interesting aspect of the entire build. As the owner was an electrical engineer by trade, he set to work completely redesigning the electrical system, running everything-save the convertible top- of a custom built CANbus system that houses the central module in a hidden compartment behind the glove box. This system allows for load monitoring, short circuit detection and simpler troubleshooting if anything does go wrong, while also allowing for modern features such as push button start, key fob access and a modern anti-theft system. The Rallye Instrument Cluster was part of the R/T package originally and this has original-look gauges that are from Dakota Digital and feature solid state reliability and an LCD screen that can show multiple engine parameters or GPS speed. The GPS speed that can be shown on the screen is also tied into the speedometer, meaning that a change in tire size or rear end ratio, doesn't necessitate a speedometer recalibration. A custom stereo is also installed- largely hidden, it relies on a Bluetooth receiver and features a Clarion controller and a combination of speakers from Boss, Pioneer and Sony.To say that no bolt went unturned in this build is an understatement. Although this description touches on most of the major upgrades, the list is significantly longer and this is a car that truly bears seeing in person. Built by Rides by Kam in Australia, the Havoc Challenger is one of the most impressive classic Challenger builds ever. The build spanned three years and approximately 10,000 hours of work by hand. Starting off with a 1970 Dodge Challenger, the car was completely stripped down and rebuilt around a bespoke Roadster Shop Fast Track chassis which featured double A-arm front suspension, a fully independent layout at the rear, as well as a NASCAR-spec steering rack. "Havoc" has certainly earned its name! The entire front end was replaced with a custom-designed hand-built steel hood to encase the new 572 Aluminum Hemi F3R ProCharged Engine. The Stanton Race Engine alone provides 900 HP and combined with the F3R direct ProCharger, this beast can make up to 2500 Horsepower!  As stated by Rob Zahabi in an interview, the goal was to completely transform the car using as many custom-fabricated parts as possible and refrain from using off-the-shelf, aftermarket upgrades. The amount of work that went into this build is astounding, culminating in a one-of-a-kind vehicle that you will find nowhere else. The vast majority of the body panels were built from scratch, and the majority of the work was done in-house by Rides by Kam, from interiors, wiring, bodywork, painting all the interior, engine bay, and underbody matte clear, fabrication, and final fit, the only time it left RBK was to go to C.A.D Custom in Melbourne to lay on the stunning PPG Charley Hutton Slanted Brown to the exterior shell.  "Havoc" made its grand debut at the Great Meguiar's Uncover at Summernats 32 in January 2019, where it clinched numerous awards, including the prestigious Top Judged Elite title. The accolades further extended to securing a spot among the final 15 of the 'Battle Of The Builders' in its category, and as a finalist for both the Goodguys Gold Award and the Best On Roadster Shop Award. Most impressively it clinched the revered ULTIMATE BEST IN SHOW honor at the 'Barrett-Jackson Cup,' presented by eBay Motors.  Assembled by Stanton Racing Engines (the folks who built Mopar's NASCAR engines at the time), the 572-ci (9.4 liters) all-aluminum big-block came with upgraded bores, race-spec valves, cylinder heads, a huge 120-mm (4.72 inches) throttle body, colossal 2,200cc injectors. Force-fed air by a crank-driven F3 ProCharger centrifugal supercharger, sent dynos into a frenzy by easily achieving around 2,500 hp. Accompanied with 6-piston Baer brakes - complete with custom Havoc badging - are a set of iconic American Legend Blackhawk wheels paired with Mickey Thompson tires. The combination provides the perfect environment for the airbag suspension. The transmission tunnel is embedded through the center of the cockpit, keeping the vehicle as low to the ground as you can get! All that power is sent to the 15-inch-wide rear wheels through a custom Tremec Magnum T56 six-speed manual and a Roadster Shop 9-inch (228.6 mm) differential.  Stepping inside you'll find an interior like no other, consisting almost entirely of handmade steel. Custom inset bucket seats are paired with Simpson racing harness seatbelts and a Ring Brothers skeleton shifter. The door mats and accents are all clad in brown diamond-stitched leather to compliment the steel-painted surfaces. "Havoc" badging adorns the vehicle, inside and out, in an eye-catching yet sophisticated way. Set the mood with custom LED accenting, from inside the cockpit to the engine bay itself. Dakota Digital provided the cockpit's red-backlit gauge cluster to accompany the custom-built dash. The twin hump design gives a nod to vintage sports cars, while the flush-mounted iPad in the center brings the vehicle into the 21st century. Despite the front of the vehicle being almost completely reconstructed, the iconic grill is the original factory grill, modified to fit the new front end. The craftsmanship truly shines in the details, with all glass flush mounted, as well as flush inset door handles, and iconic Dimple Die accents throughout the entire vehicle.  In 2022, Havoc was de-tuned from 101 octane to 91 pump fuel in order to make it more practical for frequent driving, taking the vehicle down from 2500 to ~1200 HP. New side mirrors were installed and the vehicle was lifted an extra 1.5" off the ground to assist in the drivability.
