1961 Bentley S2 Continental Park Ward Drophead Coupe: Delivered New to Wilt Chamberlain and 1 of Only 65 LHD Examples BuiltThe Bentley S2 Continental offered here is an example of Park Ward's influential and elegant 'straight through wing' body style. It is one of only 125 examples bodied in this fashion by Park Ward; of which only 65 were original left-hand drive cars like this one. Retrimmed in the 2000s to its current Caribbean Blue over Beige leather and matching blue piping. This elegant, hand-built Bentley Continental presents nicely throughout, and remains in its original left-hand drive configuration. Runs and drives but would benefit from servicing prior to use. BC99LCZ was ordered new in New York by Wilt 'The Stilt' Chamberlain from Rolls-Royce of New York. Copies of the build records state that the Bentley, originally finished in Opal over Off White hides with a Tan top, featured a radio with power aerial, power operated top and windows, Sundym glass, an altimeter, and a "special driver's seat to suit owner" along with 2 inch longer steering column. Purchased in his third season as a professional basketball player, Chamberlain was earning a princely $65,000 a season and by the time this Bentley was delivered on April 19th, 1962 had set a number of records including scoring 100 points in a single game, landing over 4,000 points in the regular season, snagging over 2,000 rebounds, and playing 3,882 minutes of the 3,890 minutes his team was on the floor. Delivered to his 342 Central Park West, New York City apartment with the UK registration plates '685 CGT' with a picture of Chamberlain and his new Bentley on file, the Drophead likely moved West with Wilt when the Philadelphia Warriors for which he played moved to San Francisco for the 1962-3 season. It is not recorded how long Chamberlain kept this Bentley but it would stay in California for the better part of its existence. Reported to have only been in two separate Southern California garages following Chamberlain's ownership. This elegant, celebrity owned Bentley S2 Continental Drophead Coupe would be a pleasurable summer motoring companion and hails from the very end of coach built Bentley motor car production. 1960 Bentley S2 Continental Drophead Coupe by Park Ward 1 of 125The Bentley S2 Continental offered here is an example of Park Ward's influential and elegant 'straight through wing' body style. It is one of only 125 examples bodied in this fashion by Park Ward, of which only 60 were original right-hand drive cars like this one. It seems likely that the colorway is the way in which it was originally supplied, a tobacco brown hue that suits the lines of the car well and is offset by a light tan top and interior. In recent years the Bentley has been laid up in garage storage. In preparation for the sale, the car was checked over and was able to be made to run and drive. We would recommend a more thorough checking over and recommissioning prior to road activity. According to its factory records, copies of which are on file, the original supplying agent was Clyde Autos Ltd. the long-established Glasgow entity who had both sold and even provided coachwork for Rolls-Royce since the 1920s. The name attached to the order was Alex N. Gibb. However, interestingly, Martin Bennett's Bentley Continental book lists its first owner as J. Mitchell and its UK license plate to have been 'DEG 1', so perhaps this was an early change of custodian. By 1980, the Rolls had emigrated to America and was now the property of Thomas E. Troxell of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania and it was from this person that the previous owner acquired the car. However, as the 1960s rolled into view, the long-serving powerplant was butting up against its development ceiling. That prompted the introduction of an aluminium 6,230-cc V-8. Smooth and quiet, the new motor underlined Bentley's status as a maker of exquisite, rapid, and graceful automobiles, and-in its various forms and developments-would be deployed until 2020, with its final application in the Mulsanne.rnrnIn the front of the S2 Continental, the engine found an ideal home. An attractive one, too, when finished in the sporting four-door 'Flying Spur' body design (number 7058) penned by George Moseley and realised by H.J. Mulliner. rnrnOne such example is chassis BC22LAR, offered here, which was one of around 50 examples of the S2 Continental platform configured in left-hand-drive form. According to an accompanying copy of the factory build records, the car was specified in Pacific Green over Beige leather and notably equipped with air conditioning, a rear window blind, and a speedometer that read in km/h. rnrnThe car was built for three-time Oscar-winning actor, Gary Cooper. The famous actor could not take delivery of the car, but it was nonetheless freighted to the United States, aboard the SS Andria. The 'Flying Spur' arrived in September 1960 and was eventually bought in June 1961 by Mr Herbert Shuffleworth, co-founder of carpet company Mohasco Industries, of Amsterdam, New York. The Rolls-Royce Owners' Club next records that Bentley collector Willis L Jessup of Hertford, North Carolina retained possession from February 1979 until 1987. The S2 Continental was then acquired by Short Hills, New Jersey resident Mr Mark Corigliano. rnrnThe car subsequently moved to North Miami, Florida, where it was maintained by the reputable Vintage Motorworks between 1991 and 2017. Having been exhibited at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, chassis BC22LAR was advertised for sale presented in its current shade of Dark Oriole, which is almost black to the naked eye.rnrnDuly acquired by the Monaco-based consignor, the S2's gearbox was rebuilt by The English Car Mechanics of Opio, France in November 2022 (invoice available to view on file) at a cost of ?9,702, while the car also benefits from an April 2024 service performed by Bentley Monaco. rnrnOffered today in Dark Oriole over authenticated Beige Connolly leather, the Bentley is offered with a copy of a FIVA Identity Card issued in January 2019.
