The line of motor cars originated in 1952 and has carried through to present day after a 19-year hiatus of the name between 1965 and 1984. The Continental designation began as the marker of a special line of Bentleys with exceptional horsepower and lowered suspensions to suit luxurious high-speed travel. Due to performance and coachwork upgrades, as well as rarity, Bentley Continental for sale, carried a higher, more exclusive initial price, fitting of the bespoke detail incorporated in every car.

Over its S1, S2 and S3 generations, all produced from 1955 to 1969, the Continental chassis was built in Crewe, England, and sent to coachbuilders, such as H.J. Mulliner and Park Ward, for bodies. Until 2003, this tradition of handcrafted coach built bodies continued, setting the Continental line apart as an exclusive luxury vehicle. In 2003, production methods shifted somewhat in Crewe, and while they still utilize a majority of hand-built components, mass production techniques were incorporated to improve factory efficiency and consistency of vehicle quality. A result of these new building techniques is that the Bentley became more broadly available each year, as productions soared from around 1,000 luxury vehicles before 2003, to 6,000 or more Continentals produced annually as of 2006.

The drive trains of the Continental series have always been known as powerful and smooth. Starting out with a 4.6-liter inline six-cylinder unit in 1952, the line received an update to the brand’s 6.2-liter V8 in 1959. The V8 carried through several displacement variations until 2003. At that point, the 6.0-liter W12 engine was introduced, which produced 552 hp - drastic leap compared to the original Continental's 152 hp. Today, the Continental is available in coupe, convertible, and sedan versions, focusing on performance, comfort, and luxury in different proportions, depending on the buyer’s need for speed.
