The Audi A6 is categorized as a mid-sized, luxury sedan. It wasn't always that popular to the masses. The A6 only recently grew in terms of both its driving dynamics as well as it popularity, all of which equaled better sales. When looking for an Audi A6 for sale, be aware that it comes in a variety of configurations to help fit most segments of the market. The A6 comes in both sedan and wagon format, featuring a variety of engines that vary from small V-6s to big V-8s. The A6 also comes in S-trim. The Audi RS6 for sale comes with a V-10 that produces a staggering 500 horsepower.

The original A6 for sale started life under the Audi 100 name. In 1994, it was rebadged as the A6. The original A6 had a 123-hp I-4, a 190-hp 2.8-liter V-6, and a 4.2-liter V-8 making 286 horsepower. The A6, like all the A6 cars after it, was available with Quattro all-wheel drive and either sedan or wagon body styles.

From approximately 1997 to 2004, the Audi A6 was a mid-sized, executive sedan that came with a list of V-6 as well as some V-8 offerings. Although by no means a bad car, it still had its issues with sportiness, vague steering, and looks that were very conventional. The base V-6 grew to 3.0 liters and made approximately 220 horsepower. The mid-power offering was the 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 that made around 250 horsepower. The big boy in the line-up was the 4.2-liter V-8 that made a solid 300 horsepower. The second generation was named to Car and Driver's Ten Best list for 2000 and 2001.

The car really took on a whole new demeanor when it was redesigned in 2004. It stole its good looks from its older brother, the Audi A8. The car grew in length to easily accommodate four passengers but gained weight in the process; growing to nearly two tons. The entry level version came with a V-6 while the more expensive version came with a V-8. The V-6 is 3.0 liters and makes around 255 horsepower. While the 4.2-liter V-8 makes a massive 350 horsepower. Of course, the bad boy of the A6 range is the S6. This car uses the Lambhorghini Gallardo’s 5.2-liter V-10 making 435 horsepower.

The third generation saw the debut of the Audi’s Multi Media Interface(MMi). The MMi system controls in-car entertainment, satellite navigation, climate control and car settings. Audi vehicles have always made nice interiors and the 3rd generation A6 only improved on this. Just like the exterior, the interior felt as well built and luxurious as the A8. In fact, you could say the car is nothing more than two-thirds of an A8. Due to the turnaround in 2005, the 3rd generation won the World Car of the Year award.
