1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Delivered New to Rinaldo ParmigianiWhen, in 1956, a wrecked Giulietta Sprint Veloce was taken to Elio Zagato for new coachwork, a remarkable transformation took place. By fitting a lighter, more aerodynamic body to the already potent Veloce foundation, Zagato created a Giulietta with the potential to rival GT cars of far greater displacement. Other Sprint Veloce owners soon followed suit and, after witnessing the performance attained by these re-bodied Giuliettas (now referred to as SVZs), Alfa Romeo contracted Carrozzeria Zagato to build a limited run of factory-sanctioned racing cars. A true dual-purpose competition gran turismo, the resulting Giulietta Sprint Zagato, or SZ, was built on a short-wheelbase chassis and featured powerful finned aluminum drum brakes, a five-speed gearbox, large-capacity fuel tank, and the high-performance tipo AR00120 engine. In typical Zagato fashion, the SZs coachwork was lightweight and minimal to the extreme, with smooth organic lines, thin aluminum panels, Plexiglas windows, and virtually no ornamentation. The cockpit was businesslike, with two supportive tube-frame seats, simple vinyl upholstery, and a three-gauge instrument binnacle. Distinguished by its special type number (AR10126), the Giulietta SZ was first delivered to customers in late 1960 and immediately dominated the 1300 GT class in endurance events, circuit races, and hill climbs. Wins were innumerable and the car soon developed a reputation as a giant killer. In total, just 200 examples of the original SZ were built, including 30 examples of the updated SZ Coda Tronca, identifiable by its long-nose, Kamm-tail coachwork. The final evolution of the racing Giulietta and the direct predecessor to the Giulia TZ, the Sprint Zagato was the premier small-displacement GT car of the early 1960s, and today is among the top tier of collectible Alfa Romeos. According to Angelo Tito Anselmis definitive book, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, this SZ, chassis 00033, was originally finished in gray and sold new, on August 25, 1960, to Rinaldo Parmigiani of La Spezia, Italy. An amateur racing driver, Parmigiani began his career in the early 1950s. Beginning in 1956, he passed through a succession of Alfa Romeos, which he campaigned at major events like the Mille Miglia, Coppa Inter-Europa, and Giro di Sicilia. His first known outing in this Sprint Zagato took place on August 15, 1961, at the 4 Hours of Pescara. Entered under the Scuderia SantAmbroeus banner, the SZ was driven by Parmigiani and Sergio Pedretti, better known by his nom de course Kim, to a respectable 7th in Class and 19th Overall. The cars last known race was at the Coppa Inter-Europa at Monza, held on September 10, 1961. One of six Scuderia SantAmbroeus entrants, including five Alfa Romeos and one Fiat-Abarth, Parmigiani drove his SZ to 4th in Class and 6th Overall. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Alfa Romeo remained in Italy, where it was later repainted red and fitted with a 1750 GT Veloce engine (tipo AR00548). By 1978, the noted Bergamo-based collector Corrado Cupellini had acquired the car and registered it in Lucca as LU 124954. Later that year, the SZ was sold to Alfa Romeo specialist Marvin Collins of El Cerrito, California, and shipped to San Francisco. Mr. Collins sold the car to Jerry Gamez of Castro Valley, California, who prepared the SZ for a return to the track and entered it in the 1980 Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Laguna Seca. In 1984, Mr. Gamez sold the Alfa Romeo to a private collector in San Antonio, Texas, whose stable included many iconic postwar European sports cars. This SZ has not been seen in public in over 30 years, and its appearance has changed little since arriving in the US over four decades ago. Having been parked for many years, mechanical attention will be required prior to use; however, the cosmetic condition is such that, for some collectors, the SZ could be recommissioned and maintained visually, as is. Significantly, the all-important stamped Zagato body number (441) has been located in several areas around the car. Accompanying the sale is a file of documentation that includes original maritime shipping paperwork from 1978, Italian and California registration records, and various service invoices from Jeremiah Browns Mouse Engineering in Oakland, California, and Fredz Autogofast in Berkeley, California.  If only for its status as one of the most successful Italian GT cars of the early 1960s, the Giulietta SZ is among the most collectible and historically significant postwar Alfa Romeos. For decades, knowledgeable collectors have admired the special qualities of these rare Zagato-bodied Giuliettas their lively performance, highly individual character, and thoroughbred competition bloodline. 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 750 Spider Veloce, Pinin FarinaChassis No. AR1495F07582Engine No. *number in the description*95- Documented high-performance Veloce model.- One of 2,796 Veloce Spiders produced between 1956 and 1961.- Photo documented restoration by MAS Restorations, Las Vegas, Nevada.- Concours level restoration to original specs and colors. Alfa Romeo, proving that more power is a good thing, offered the Giulietta Spider Veloce beginning with the 1956 model year. Veloce, appropriately, translates to fast in Italian. The Type 750F engine was enhanced to 90hp (10 more than standard models) thanks to an updated twin choke Weber 40 DCOE2 carburetor, 9:1 compression, new design cylinder head, 9mm valve stems, and bigger diameter main journals on the crankshaft. A limited number, with chassis numbers from AR1495F07501 to AR1495F07612, were sent to the U.S. in 1960, including this example. In total, Alfa Romeo built 14,300 Giulietta Spiders and an additional 2,796 Veloce Spiders between 1956 and 1961. A 109mph top speed was claimed by the factory. Alfa Romeo factory records indicate Chassis No. 07582 to be configured as a left-hand drive Spider in full 750F Veloce trim. It was completed on March 7, 1960 and dispatched to Hoffman Motor Car Co. in New York, New York. While the original owner remains unknown, it was acquired in January 1962 by legendary Orlando, Florida radio DJ, William Weird Beard Vermillion, Jr. While working at WLOF AM radio in the 1960's and 1970's, Vermillion is credited for promoting and popularizing Van Morrison's Brown-Eyed Girl single to the Top-40 list in 1967. Copies of his initial temporary registration from 1962 along with various Florida registrations remain with the car.It was purchased by a subsequent owner in 2009 having been in long-term storage. Despite being complete, the car was in need of restoration. It was entrusted to MAS Restorations of Las Vegas, Nevada, which over the next five years, completed a concours level restoration to exceptional standards. Taken down to bare metal, the body was refinished in epoxy primer on top of which the original Rosso Chiaro color in single-stage urethane paint was applied. The interior was correctly reupholstered in its original colors of cream leather with red piping and red carpets using the originals as patterns to ensure authenticity. An in-dash Motorola AM radio and the original tools and books are included. Mechanically, the entire drivetrain was rebuilt - the top end by Norm Racing and the bottom end by Universal Automotive and Rebuilding; both in Las Vegas. A new Stayfast convertible top was installed as the finishing touch. The restoration is documented in 160 photographs along with another 100 photographs following the completion of work. Attesting to the quality of the restoration, the car was shown at the 2016 Red Rocks Concours d'Elegance where it received Top 10 of Show honors. In 2019 at the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club Cortile Della Corsa, the Spider earned a Certificate D'Oro with a score of 102.

Rare 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Matching Numbers  This incredibly original 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce 750-Series is an extremely rare and exciting discovery. Red with red over white interior. This is the most original Giulietta Sprint Veloce you could ever ask for and an enthusiast dream come true. This car has been under the same ownership since the early 1960's and has never been restored. Here's your opportunity to be the first to restore a matching numbers car that's nothing but honest. Nice and straight Bertone coachwork. A solid and complete car that's full of both integrity and charm. This car has not been publicly offered for sale in 6 decades. The 750-series Sprint Veloce is very hard to come by and this particular example is the ideal candidate for a preservation class car. It's been off the road for several years and is not currently running. Alfa Romeo established the small car, big performance formula that would characterize the Milanese marque's finest offerings when they introduced the Bertone-styled Giulietta Sprint in 1954. Alfa's classic twin-cam four was downsized to 1,290 cc for the 750-series Giulietta, gaining an alloy cylinder block in the process. The Sprint coupe was soon joined by Berlina and Spider versions. The Giulietta model's success surprised even Alfa Romeo themselves; production targets were revised upwards, and to satisfy demands for increased performance, upgraded Veloce versions of the Sprint and spider were introduced. The combination of a rev-happy engine, fine handling, responsive chassis, and excellent brakes made the Giulietta Sprint a pure driver's car and explains why these stylish Alfa Romeos continue to attract the discerning enthusiast today.
