The Italian car manufacturing company who built the Ford Pantera car, founded in 1959, started out originally producing various prototypes and racing cars. DeTomaso eventually developed a reputation for producing sport and luxury cars. The DeTomaso Pantera for sale, produced in 1971, succeeded the DeTomaso Mangusta. The manufacturer also made a luxury version of the Pantera called the Pantera L, which was first introduced in 1972 and featured a 248-hp engine. The Pantera GTS was another trim level option for the car. The Pantera GT5 was a refresh of the car that had better brakes and a wide body kit to fit the larger wheels and tires. Ford began importing Panteras for the American sports car market but ended its importation to the U.S. in 1975. A very limited number of Panteras were imported in the 1980s. It is said that there were roughly 7,200 Panteras built in its lifetime. DeTomaso went into liquidation in 2004, although they continued to produce vehicles well after this date.
