These first models were the first true classics, as each was given the hyphenated name. There was a two-cylinder model creating 10 hp produced from 1904-1906, a three-cylinder model creating 15 hp produced in 1905, a four-cylinder model creating 20 hp produced from 1905-1908 and a six-cylinder that could create 30 hp produced from 1905-1906. That was quite a lot of power at the time, and the six-cylinder Rolls-Royce for sale had a price of £890, the equivalent of approximately £80,000 today.
It began with lunch in 1904 that lead to a partnership between Henry Royce and Charles Rolls. Henry had just built his first car a few months before his introduction to Charles, one of the first people to own a car dealership. He liked what he saw, and commissioned Henry to produce as many cars as he could, all of which would be sold exclusively by Charles.
RR limited was officially formed as a company just two years later in 1906, and after acquiring land in Derby, England, the production factory was officially open for business in July of 1908, just a year after the introduction of one of their most iconic models, the Ghost.
After the end of the first World War, RR acquired a second factory in Springfield, Massachusetts, marking their official entry into the American market in 1921. After ten years of production, the doors were closed. Despite shutting down operations in Springfield, the 1930s engines broke records on the land, in the air and on the sea, pushing their prestige higher with each victory.
Although a new car might be a wise decision given the quality of the brand, a vintage car still carries the same panache and dignity as anything on the road. Of all the classics, nothing can touch the collectability of the Silver Cloud. Built from 1955 to 1966, they stand as symbols of British dominance in the world of luxury coach building. Silver Cloud 1 was powered by a straight six engine and lasted until 1959. It was succeeded by Silver Cloud II which offered a 6.2 liter V8.
The Silver Shadow arrived in late 1965 with refinements that placed it in a class of its own. A new hydraulic suspension system combined braking and leveling to produce the smoothest ride in the industry. One of the longest lived models, production lasted until 1980 with over 30,000 cars. Several considerations must be made when considering a vintage model. Be sure to contact one of our dealers for a proper inspection of all mechanicals to ensure your purchase is worthwhile.
No matter what model you are looking for, the cardinal rule must always be observed. The iconic ornament above the front grille must be called by her given name: “The Spirit of Ecstasy”. She is the symbol of the brand, and an object of desire for vagrants and thieves. Newer model cars have an option to hide her once the car is locked, keeping your investment away from prying eyes.
Be sure to browse through our listings and find the used RR for sale that perfectly suits you. Any of our trusted dealers and individual sellers will be able to connect you with a brand new car or pre-owned historic model, whichever best fits your current collection. Be sure to look for a certified dealership for all required maintenance and warranty work for your new coupe or convertible
