As the first vehicle to be designed completely within the brand’s AMG sub-division, the Mercedes SLS for sale was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Housing the last naturally aspirated engine in the lineup, the AMG featured a thundering 6.2 liter V8 generating 563 hp, dubbed the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated production series engine by AMG.

 

MB began production in 2010, with a decided end date of 2015, following the Final Edition of 2014. Featuring gullwing doors and styling cues reminiscent of the 1950s and ‘60s 300 SL Gullwing, the sports car combines blistering performance and luxury in one eye-catching package. Unconventional doors present a particular challenge in the scenario of a rollover accident, and in anticipation of such an event, the Germans created a unique solution. They fit the car with pyrotechnic hinges that will, when inverted for 10 to 15 milliseconds, fire and effectively sever the hinge and allow passengers to push the doors outward and exit safely.

 

In 2011, a roadster became available with a three-layered fabric top capable of folding and unfolding with the supercar traveling at speeds below 31 mph. A minor weight gain of 88 lbs came with the body configuration change, but the performance was otherwise uncompromised.
