Maurice Wilks was the chief designer for Rover in 1947, his brother Spencer the managing director. It’s believed that the design is based off an old American military surplus Willys-Overland Jeep that was used on the farm. It worked, but they needed a vehicle geared toward agricultural uses, not war purposes, and they needed for it to be more reliable.

 

With that, the wheels of creation were set into motion. A year later, in 1948, Rover launched the Series 1, and it was met with an overwhelming amount of success. In fact, their success was so enormous, that the LR division broke from Rover, becoming its own independent entity built around practicality.

 

The lineup didn’t change drastically from year to year, and only a few more models were ever introduced, but they never needed to.
